Novels–You Are Now Free:The Independent Movement!

Here’s the thing. I’ve been trying to figure out how to put this in words. See. You don’t understand the significance of the fact that you’re able to read my books, and those of your other favorite indie authors. I was watching yesterday’s episode of Oprah’s Next Chapter. She interviewed Spike Lee. I remember the late 80’s and early to mid 90’s when a new wave of independent films hit our screens. There was Spike who first gave us “She’s Gotta Have it” and then “Do The Right Thing.” There was Billy Bob Thornton who gave us “Sling Blade.” Quentin Tarantino first fave us “Reservoir Dogs.” If it weren’t for…

The Calm Before The Story… Grrrr…

So last night I think I went to bed before 9:00 p.m. which is mighty early for me. I mean, America’s Next Top Model hadn’t even come on yet. Before I turned the TV off and crawled between the sheets I was outlining the next Parched novel. I have a few titles written down like, Lured, Stolen Love and Forgotten Kiss, and then there’s Snatched. I’m thinking about ix-naying them all. But you have to get the cruddy stuff on paper because it leads to the best stuff. Anyway. It’s  9:21 a.m. I woke up at 8:59a.m., well actually a little earlier because I made myself wake up to ditch…

In the Beginning — Constructing the First Pages

So right now I’m at the beginning of this new book. 🙂 That’s me smiling because I’m loving who my main character is becoming. But this writing got me to thinking. These are the critical pages, dude (Hey, I’m seriously Californian, Southern Cal that is–yeah, I say dude.)…. These pages are where it’s all starting to happen. I’m painting her weaknesses, strengths–the initial world. You see characters have to arc. Let me repeat that. Characters have to ARC. That is, start out being one way and grow to be another. And it’s the acting and reacting to the things in her world that are throwing obstacles at her, which creates…

5 Reasons to NOT Write from Home… (now 6!)

if you don’t have to… 1. The TV What more can I say. Right now I’m tuned into a rib and chicken cooking contest after only having a bowl of raisin bran. I sure would like to be one of those judges right now.  Precious writing minutes are dwindling away second by second. 2. You’re able to look around the room and think of everything else you have to do today, like the laundry, the dusting, paper shredding, pay bills, etc… And still, there’s the TV. So on top of ALL the tasks I have to do today, the TV is still there calling my name, sucking me into whatever…

    The Artist LIVES!!!

Again. Bam. No, really, it has been a long journey to get back here, to come full circle like this.  I feel like I did when I hula-hooped again, a few weeks ago in Seattle. See, I used to hula-hoop all the time when I was 8 years old.  However for the last two years, I’ve tried it again, and couldn’t get it going. That’s until I met the hippy at the marketplace who gave me a lesson, sold me a solid hula-hoop and told me to just go for it, “believe in yourself!” And I did go for it. She turns to look at her hula hoop resting against…
